SAM PHILLIPS
Don't Do Anything
(Nonesuch)

A pop-rock legend from back in the late ‘80s, singer songwriter Sam Phillips released her third CD for the Nonesuch label in 2008. Don’t Do Anything combines her patented approach to modern pop song writing laced with the edge of being on the legendary Nonesuch label, started almost 45 years ago by Elektra founder Jac Holzman. Although Nonesuch started out as a classical / avant garde outlet for Holzman’s expansive pop vision, the label’s affiliation with the Time Warner axis over the past decade has yielded some mighty impressive pop and rock releases into the 2000’s. Although Phillips as worked with T Bone Burnett on most of her releases, she now handles the production chores on Don’t Do Anything by herself and the results stand up among her best works. A number of players assist Ms. Phillips here including guitarist Eric Gorfain. In addition to writing all the music and handling vocals and production, Ms. Phillips also shines on electric / acoustic guitars and piano. Commenting on taking over the production chores from T Bone Burnett, Phillips states, ‘T Bone and I had done so many records together and he said, “Well, if you don’t know how to make records by now…” And it’s true. I do know when something feels right. It’s time for me to produce my own records. It’s time for me to take the reins and go it alone.’ On Don’t Do Anything there’s plenty of fine moods and melodies for long time Phillips fans to savor and enjoy. www.SamPhillips.com
