DAVID BOWIE
VH1 Storytellers
(Virgin/Capitol/VH1)

In 1969, David Bowie burst onto the world stage with his first smash hit, “Space Oddity.” 30 years later, Bowie—by then a world wide pop phenomenon—performed some of his most famous cuts live before a throng of devoted fans, and the results can be seen and heard on the 2009 CD/DVD David Bowie VH1 Storytellers. With his band including long time keyboard genius Mike Garson, guitarist Reeves Gabrels and more, Bowie’s VHI Storytellers combines the best tracks from his then 1999 album ...hours along with unexpected classic Bowie delights such as “Drive In Saturday,” (from Aladdin Sane), “Life On Mars” (an amazing set opening duet with Garson) as well as one of Bowie’s earliest power pop masterpieces “Can’t Help Thinking About Me.” Perhaps the coolest thing about this CD and DVD set is Bowie’s intimate, casual banter between tracks, such as describing how “Drive In Saturday” was originally written as a single for Mott The Hoople and how “Can’t Help Thinking About Me” was written after the late great Steve Marriott told Bowie back in 1965 that he was planning to start the Small Faces. Looking back, 1999 was a great year for rock. With the world trying to come out of a transitional downward recession, 2009 is turning out to be a depressing climb back—especially with this first ever release of Bowie’s VH1 Storytellers CD and DVD released in time to remind us in fact, just how cool 1999 really was. www.DavidBowie.com
