Baboon Strength
(Spire Artist Media)

In the spirit of eclectic guitar practitioners like Bill Frisell, Brooklyn based Charlie Hunter really hones in on his own wealth of guitar styles on the 2009 CD release of Baboon Strength. Released on his own Spire Artist Media label, the CD features Hunter recording to 16 track two inch tape. With a solid groove backed by hard hitting rock rhythms, pop hooks and plenty of soul, the CD is a true amalgam of Hunter’s unique instrumental guitar sound. With its crazy cover art and subsequent home page imagery, Baboon Strength pairs Hunter’s bluesy pop instrumental sound with Tony Mason (drums) and Erik Deutsch (keyboards). For every influence like Frisell and Scofield, Hunter steps out with an equally opposite edge that taps into nostalgic musical icons like The Ventures and ‘60s TV soundtracks.
