Twenty
first century pop can be all over the map and no where is this more
apparent then on the self-titled 2008 CD from Englands Lord
Skywave. Basically the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist and vocalist
Simon Lord, the Lord Skywave CD is an auspicious debut
containing some wildly diverging musical styles. Any musician who
cites Robert Wyatt, Moondog, McDonald & Giles and Sly Stone as
influences and actually delivers the goods is worth a listen. One
of the the CDs instrumentals Dialogues, sounds like
a modern Penguin Cafe Orchestra with a trio for oboe, bassoon and
piano and is beyond brilliant. Apparently, Lords grandmother
Madeleine Dring is another influence that finds its way
onto the CD. Other cuts feature guest vocalists and blend McCartney-esque
electro eclectica while that sonic hip-hop beat is never completely
buried in the mix. www.SimonWLord.com
