Awareness Or Illusion is the 24th official album from Long Island’s MOTU. It’s a true blues / rock / pop masterpiece. A throwback to MOTU’s very early albums which had an unmistakable raw American-Roots Rock sound dominated by guitar. Dr Richard Michelson (MOTU®) once again plays a plethora of instruments on this album; keyboards, mandolin, harmonica, acoustic and electric guitars, bass, pedal steel guitar, and dobro. However, this is definitely a guitarist’s album. Dr Rich shreds with style at times sounding like Warren Haynes, Keith Richards, Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix, and even Jeff Beck.
In fact the fourth song on the album, titled “For Jeff”, is an awesome instrumental fusion guitar tribute to the late guitar icon. MOTU’s performance channels Jeff Beck to the point of actually sounding like him. Ed Modzel joins in on drums sounding like Charlie Watts during his jazz era. For the bulk of the album, Dee Michelson sings harmonies with Dr Rich and solos on several songs showing her talented vocal expertise. These 11 new MOTU original songs demonstrate Dr Rich’s sustained energy in writing along with his masterful skills in a variety of different guitar playing methods.
The album begins with “Just Shut Up, Stop Talking To Me”, which is a fun Rolling Stones style tune with great slide guitar riffs and a strong bass punch. Immediately following is “Something Has Changed”, which is a dark grunge jam-rock song. Dee delivers sweet lead vocals to tame the harsh Hendrix style guitar leads performed by Dr Rich. A great rock tune.
Song three, “There’s Only Us”, begins as almost a Country-Americana tune with nice harmonies until the mid-song Slash type hard lead guitar changes the mood in a cool way. Dr Rich also does some notable pedal steel guitar and mandolin on this song. “For Jeff” follows as discussed above. The next song, “Too Much Bullshit To Normalize”, is classic MOTU Delta-style blues with Dee delivering biting lyrics to a heavy beat backdrop of drums, bass, harmonica, mandolin, slide dobro and slide electric guitars.
Song six, “You Always Got Something To Say”, is a rock trio of bass, guitar, and drums with some excellent guitar licks. MOTU delivers lyrical sarcasm about those opinionated people who we all have in our circle of friends.
The next song, “I Look To The East”, is a haunting Americana song of reflection sung beautifully by Dee. Pedal steel guitar, pure electric and acoustic guitars and keyboards provide a perfect soft rock background that can bring tears to one’s eyes.
This soft mood is extended by the next solo instrumental acoustic guitar piece simply titled, “Horizon”, then followed by song number nine which is the title track of the album, “Awareness Or Illusion”. Stylistically like some of the later Led Zeppelin songs with ethereal keyboards and Jimmy Page style guitar, Dr Rich presents a dreamscape type rock tune with a classic slow blues progression. This one stays in your head.
Song ten, “Easier To Be Blind”, returns the listener to masterful harmonica and slide guitar rock. This has always been the foundation of what MOTU does best and he is amazing again on this tune.
Finally, song eleven, “A Company Man”, closes out the album with a Gov’t Mule style rock song again showing off Dr. Rich’s ability to perform on guitar with a variety of methods ranging from finger tapping to slide to everything in-between.
This 24th MOTU album, Awareness Or Illusion, is a fun American Roots-Rock guitar driven album. It is well written, performed, and highly recommended to be played loud and often.
LYRICS
1. Just Shut Up Stop Talking To Me
So fine, like moonshine
Just shut up, stop talking to me
Devine like fine wine
Just shut up, stop talking to me
Don’t need to hear, to hear you speak
No opinions, no critique
No small talk, no child’s play
Don’t make me wait, baby, I ain’t got all day
So fine, like moonshine
Just shut up, stop talking to me
Devine like fine wine
Just shut up, stop talking to me
So fine, like moonshine
Just shut up, stop talking to me
Devine like fine wine
Just shut up, stop talking to me
2. Something has changed
Something has changed
Feels like I’ve been rearranged
Feels very strange
Something has changed
It don’t feel right
Feeling lost in the night
Filled with visions of fright
Something has changed
Caught me by surprise
Hit me right between the eyes
No attempts to apologize
Something has changed
No time to be mad
No warning to be sad
Feels like I’ve been had
Something has changed
Something has changed
Something has changed
Something has changed
Something has changed
3. There’s only us
I’m not tryin’ to start a fight
Just thought the facts would shed some light
The truth don’t need no rewrite
Don’t need no grift to be alright
There’s only us
There’s only us
There’s only us
Alright to have a different view
In America that’s what we do
Love will show you what’s true
Love is the knife that cuts through
There’s only us
There’s only us
There’s only us
I’m not asking you to subscribe
To all the views I describe
Just beware of those that take a bribe
To buy the lies that they prescribe
There’s only us
There’s only us
There’s only us
4. For Jeff (Instrumental)
5. Too much bullshit to normalize
How can we ever get along
In a world that’s gone so wrong
So many disguised
So many lies
Too much bullshit to normalize
What will we tell our youth
more hate or the truth
Will we apologize
for telling lies
Too much bullshit to normalize
6. You always got something to say
Your life is so hard
In your sheltered backyard
With just your credit cards
But you always got something to say
You never paid your dues
Always singing the blues
You never watch the news
But you always got something to say
You can’t name the presidents
Ain’t got no common sense
Got no point of reference
But you always got something to say
You got a strong point of view
When you ain’t got a clue
Don’t know what is true
But you always got something to say
7. I Look to the East
I look to the East to see the sunrise
The air was so still, no clouds in the skies
Another morning here, I’m thankful I’m still around
I look to the East
I see my past and decisions I’ve made
I know my failures and what I’ve paid
Yet another morning here I’m thankful I’m still around
I look to the East
I see my friends and all those I held dear
Some I made smile and some I drove to tears
Yet another morning here I’m thankful I’m still around
I look to the East
I’ve seen a world where no one could agree
For everyone to live in peace and to be free
Another morning here I’m thankful I’m still around
I look to the East
Looking East, Looking East
Looking East, Looking East
Another morning here I’m thankful I’m still around
I look to the East
8. Horizon (Instrumental)
9. Awareness or Illusion
Give us one more chance
We can take it slow
Is it awareness or illusion
Can we play a part
In each other’s dreams
Is it awareness or illusion
Do we really see
A conclusion
Is it awareness or illusion
Is this just our way
To end our confusion
Is it awareness or illusion
10. Easier to be Blind
Maybe you feel guilty
Maybe you feel mad
Lying to yourself
Is what makes you sad
Not everyone is good
Not everyone is kind
Sometimes it’s easier to be blind
You thought you knew someone
Because they’re your friend
Open your eyes
Stop trying to pretend
You need answers
You need them today
Stop looking for reasons
To not walk away
Not everyone is good
Not everyone is kind
Sometimes it’s easier to be blind
So hard to see
The hate some conceal
Easy to believe
They share love that you feel
The truth is so hard
But the truth is what’s real
The truth is mankind
Isn’t ideal
11. A Company Man
Get my hat hold my hand
I’m on my way to understand
Back here where it all began
Selling your soul to be a company man
Don’t want to be in your clan
Don’t believe in a madman
Don’t want to be no yes-man
Selling your soul to be a company man
Don’t agree with no con man
Just a grift self-serving plan
Telling lies with books they ban
Selling your soul to be a company man
Won’t play the part of your leading man
Don’t believe in you and I ain’t no fan
Won’t be a part of your selfish plan
Selling your soul to be a company man
