In
between releasing great new albums from pop giants like Matthew Sweet
and Richard Thompson, L.A. based Shout Factory continues delving
into the vaults of 60s and 70s pop culture trivia. Like
their Ozzie & Harriet DVD series, Shout! comes up some kind of
winner with a 2008 DVD featuring talk show host Tom Snyder,
and his fabled 70s late night NYC TV show, The Tomorrow
Show With Tom Snyder. This particular DVD, entitled John,
Paul, Tom & Ringo features three shows with Tom interviewing
John Lennon (from 1975), Paul & Linda McCartney
(accompanied by Wings members, from 1979) and a third show with
Ringo Starr, filmed in 1981. Rebroadcast on December 9, 1980,
in remembrance of the 75 show, the Lennon interview on DVD 1
is retrofitted with Toms 12/9/80 interviews with Lennons
then producer Jack Douglas and rock journalist Lisa Robinsonwith
all three clearly still in a state shock, as was the whole music world.
A missed figure on New York's fabled late night TV, (there is no more
NYC late night TV!), Snyder was by no means a diehard Beatles fan.
That kind of interview with Lennon would never happen. But with the
release of John, Paul, Tom & Ringo, clearly there was something
charming about Tom's nicotine fueled social commentaries and of course,
seeing him 30+ years later, on DVD with no less than three different
Beatles, sheds new light on his bold and now famous journalistic initiatives.
